Additional funding for projects previously supported by Sandbox Films

 

Overview

Sandbox Films is a proud supporter of filmmakers seeking to experiment with, redefine, and advance the science documentary form. In addition to providing equity financing for Sandbox Films productions, we sponsor numerous grant opportunities for filmmakers through partnerships with the Sundance Institute, AFO Camp 4Science, and CPH:DOX. 

In recognition of the current limitations of the financing landscape for documentary film, and with the desire to continue to support works that have already demonstrated promise and alignment with our mission to illuminate the art and beauty of scientific inquiry, Sandbox Films is pleased to offer a  new funding opportunity for past beneficiaries of Sandbox Films-related grants. 

 

Eligibility & How to Apply

This is an invite-only opportunity for select past beneficiaries of Sandbox grant funding.

Films in the following stages of the production process are welcome to apply: development, production, post production, post finishing. Films that have already had their world premiere are not eligible to apply.

Funding & Terms

Each project may request up to $150,000 USD to put towards specific production or post production needs (e.g. field shoots, editing, sound and color finishing, composers, etc.).

Funds are non-recoupable and will be distributed via contract between the filmmaker and Sandbox Films. 

In acknowledgement of the support Sandbox Films requires:

  • An opportunity for meaningful creative consultation on the film (via review of a fine cut of the film)
  • Scientific accuracy check of the film at a fine cut (to be completed by the Sandbox team)
  • An “In Association With Sandbox Films” credit in the main titles/billing block plus a logo credit in/on the end credits, billing block, poster and promotional materials where any non-distributor logo appears.
  • Co-exclusive ownership (shared with Producer and any other mutually approved third party) of educational and non-theatrical rights, the exploitation of which shall not conflict with any festival screenings, theatrical screenings or awards eligibility. 
  • Permission to show the Picture at private, invite-only corporate events for company stakeholders including staff, leadership and associates of the Simons Foundation, not to be exploited in a way that would disqualify the picture for any award or festival.  
  • Upon completion: A copy of the film, key information and (if available) promotional assets.
  • That Sandbox and its parent/subsidiaries be added to Producer’s errors and omissions and general liability insurance policies as additional insureds.

 

Current Application Cycle

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 15, 2026.
